COLLAGEN – what you need to know
What is collagen?
- Collagen is a major structural protein that acts as a key building block of our bones, teeth, muscles, skin, joints and connective tissue.
- Imagine a glue that is important for building cell walls and intercellular space and consequently literally holds the body together, giving the skin elasticity and strength, which contributes to a youthful appearance.
- It comes from the Greek word “kólla” which means glue and the suffix “gene” which means to produce.
- Collagen, which contains the most protein in the body, makes up more than a third of the total protein.
- It is rich in amino acids that help the body create new collagen and thus provide it with strength and structure.
There are different types of collagen
There are at least 28 different types of collagen in our body, but type I, II and III form the most collagen – between 80 and 90%.
TYPE I
- the most represented collagen in our body
- gives structure to the skin, muscles, ligaments
- joint and cartilage support
- forms 90% of our skin, nails, bones
- supports healthy and youthful skin
- fish collagen
TYPE II
TIP III
What are the advantages and benefits of collagen?
- Maintains youthful-looking skin – boosts elasticity and hydrates, strengthens skin cells, reduces unwanted wrinkles and cellulite
- Healthy and rejuvenated hair – prevents damage to hair follicles, boosts hair growth and makes it thicker
- Improves joint mobility – anti-inflammatory, great for healing arthritis
- Strengthens the bones– increases bone mineral density and lowers chances of getting osteoporosis
- Promotes weight loss – protein and amino acids help retain muscle mass and boost digestion
- Better digestion – restore and strengthens the intestinal lining for healthy bowel function
- Supports a healthy heart – proline (aminoacid) helps wash out the fats in arteries and lowers high blood pressure
Why should you be taking collagen?
Our body naturally produces collagen, but the sad news is that production starts to decline by about 1% per year, starting when you turn 20. Between the ages of 30 and 40, most people will lose between 10% and 20% of their collagen, skin becomes less elastic, the hair slowly loses its shine, and wrinkles appear, which become more pronounced with age. Even nails become more brittle. Therefore, you should provide the body with an additional source of collagen, which stimulates the natural process of collagen formation.
Collagen can also be obtained from certain foods and collagen supplements. So could you simply drink bone broth or eat lots of dark green vegetables? Well yes, of course! Bone broth is rich in collagen, gelatine and amino acids, but you would need to eat a whole truckload of soup or vegetables for the same benefits. The vast majority of us already drink and love bone broths, mostly for many health benefits, but they simply don’t contain as much collagen as we need for a therapeutic dose.
How much should you consume daily?
Clinical studies have shown an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles after eight weeks of consuming 5g of Naticol collagen peptides daily. Skin homogeneity and skin radiance also improve after eight weeks of consuming just 2.5g of Naticol collagen peptides per day. The recommended daily intake is 10g (2 teaspoons). Stir in a glass of water, lemon water or orange juice, leave for two minutes to dissolve and drink. With 10g of powder, you get 5g of Naticol collagen peptides.
The importance of vitamin C
Vitamin C and collagen make the perfect pair and work together great. The body is not able to to produce and store collagen without vitamin C as they work hand in hand. That is why vitamin C is a mandatory factor in collagen synthesis as it is in charge of merging cells and creating collagen.
Many assume that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides the vitamin C we need to stay resilient and healthy. Unfortunately, these days this is very rare. If we think about it, because of environmental pollution and rapid farming, fruits and vegetables do not get the proper care they once got. In addition, the stress that is increasingly present depletes the supply of many vitamins, including vitamin C. So, less nutritious food + more stress = higher need more vitamins.

The following facts prove that excretion vitamin C creates a higher demand for it.
- Pressures (traffic, hard difficult days, caffeine,..)
- Medicine
- Body during development (children and pregnant women need more vitamin C)
- infections and illnesses (cold,..)
- smoking
- polluted environment
If we don’t notice or feel progress, it’s time to start taking a vitamin C supplement that works. Because the body naturally slows down the production of collagen with age, we provide it with a source of building blocks of our own collagen by consuming it in the form of a dietary supplement.
