Lack of sulphur in the body
Sulphur is one of the fundamental building blocks of life, after calcium and phosphorus it is the third most abundant mineral in our body. Sulphur-rich diet is the protein-rich diet, but only two of the twenty amino acids that build proteins contain sulphur. These are the essential amino acid methionine, which the body cannot synthesize on its own, and cysteine, which the body can synthesize but needs a continuous supply of sulphur for it. A small amount of inorganic and organic sulphur is found in plant sources such as garlic, onions and broccoli.
Lack of sulphur in the body manifests in the form of health problems or physical appearance. MSM is known as organic sulphur, chemically speaking, the molecule is methylsulfonylmethane with the formula C2H6O2S, which contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur. 100 mg of MSM powder contain at least 33 mg of organically bound sulphur.
Where is sulphur located?
Half the amount of sulphur in the body is found in muscles, skin and bones. New studies even suggest that sulphur is such an important element in the body – goes side by side with vitamin C, as our body needs to maintain its sulphur values all the time for healthy and normal functioning.
The body needs 1/8 of a teaspoon of sulphur per day, which is used for maintaining membrane permeability and preventing tissue hardening. The new cells that are formed in the body need sulphur, which is also found (with sufficient intake) in the haemoglobin of the blood.
Sulphur in diet
Science says that MSM is “the beauty mineral” because it affects the hair growth, others call it “the health mineral” because MSM or organic sulphur helps with various chronic diseases.
The fact is that sulphur is an essential mineral or, as already said, building block of life. Most of it comes in the form of organic sulphur compounds, and MSM powder is one of the best examples of organic sulphur compound, so using MSM powder is one of the easiest ways to increase the intake of organic sulphur in the body.
Organic sulphur can be consumed by eating a protein-rich diet, but with a normal diet we get significantly less MSM than by using dietary supplements, for example in the form of MSM powder. One of the sulphur sources is cow’s milk – a litre of cow’s milk contains 3 mg of MSM, which is especially true for unheated or unpasteurised milk.
Another source of organic sulphur are fresh tomatoes, which, however, contain less than 1 mg of MSM per kilo. The third source of natural or organic sulphur is corn. Natural sulphur is also found in a variety of grains, fruits and vegetables.
Why take sulphur as a dietary supplement?
Several different preparations containing MSM can be found on the Slovenian market. MSM powder has the best bioavailability of sulphur, which can be found in form of capsules and tablets. Manufacturers can include glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin C to the MSM.
When comparing the organic sulphur content of MSM in the diet with the content in powders and other dietary supplements, we observe a much higher amount of MSM in the supplements. The content may be up to 2000 mg per day, which might seem as a very high amount. That is exactly why consuming MSM powder and other MSM dietary supplements is so effective, thus is an excellent source of organic sulphur, which promotes health, vitality and even beauty.

It affects everything, even the external beauty
Most processed foods contain significantly too little sulphur, so the body quickly begins to lack it, especially if we don’t eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables. Studies show that many people don’t have high enough levels of sulphur in their bodies, and its lack increases with age.
Sulphur in the body is important for the formation of collagen, elastin, cartilage and keratin. It takes care and supports the muscle flexibility and strength, bones, joints and internal membranes, the proper functioning of enzymes, hormonal balance and the proper functioning of the immune system.
It also contributes to healthy skin, hair and nails, which is why sulphur is often called “the beauty mineral”. Sulphur belongs to the same chemical family as oxygen, and is a powerful detoxifier that even helps remove heavy metals from the body. Because it plays an important role in the formation of red blood cells during an injury, it ensures healthy circulation in the injury area, thus brings the necessary nutrients there. It has antiseptic and cleansing effects in the digestive tract, meanwhile stimulates bile secretions, cleanses the blood, improves the condition of the hair, promotes proper liver functioning and stimulates metabolism. In addition, sulphur is used in the body to produce glutathione, one of the most powerful antioxidants produced in our body and, among other things, also serves to detoxify the body.
